Mazus miquelii (Mazus miquelii)

Japanese: サギゴケ(鷺苔) - サギゴケ(英語表記)Mazus miquelii
Mazus miquelii (Mazus miquelii)
A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family. It is found in various parts of Japan south of Honshu, Taiwan, and China, and grows in moist places such as rice field ridges. The stems with opposite leaves are long and creeping, which is especially noticeable after flowering. The leaves at the base of the stem are obovate, 2-5 cm long and 1.5-2 cm wide, but the leaves at the top become almost circular. A short flower stalk emerges from the base of the stem in April and May, and bears several flowers. The corolla is labiate and reddish purple or white. The reddish purple flowers are sometimes called purple moss, and the white flowers are sometimes called sagigoke or sagishiba. A yellowish brown spot is noticeable in the center of the lower lip of the flower. The style is single and long, with a bifurcated tip that closes immediately when touched.
