Bamberg - Bamberg (English spelling)

A city located on the Regnitz River in Bavaria, in south-central Germany. Population 69,000 (2000). People have lived in the area since prehistoric times, but it developed after Henry II made it the seat of a bishopric in 1007. In addition to thriving commercial activities, the city has an industrial district and a famous horticultural district in the east, but as a Catholic center, it has a particularly strong religious and cultural character. In addition to the great cathedral (11th to 13th century) where masterpieces of sculpture such as the Knights of Bamberg remain, there are new and old palaces, city hall, etc., and it is known as a town with many historical buildings and works of art. The town was registered as a cultural heritage site of the World Heritage Site in 1993 (World Cultural Heritage). The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, which continues the traditions of the former Prague Symphony Orchestra, is also famous.
