Irish nationalist. Elected to the British House of Commons in 1828, he was denied a seat because he was Catholic. He became an MP after the passage of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829. In 1840, he organized the Irish Separatist Association, and the following year became Mayor of Dublin. In 1843, he was arrested for sedition, but was found not guilty.
