Kamihira [village] - Kamiita

Japanese: 上平[村] - かみたいら
Kamihira [village] - Kamiita
A village in Higashitonami District, in the southwestern tip of Toyama Prefecture. Population 1,016 (1995). Occupying the gorge and mountainous area of the upper Sho River, it borders Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture to the south. Also known as Gokayama along with the neighboring villages of Taira and Toga, it is a typical isolated mountain village, and was part of the Kaga Domain in the early modern period. The development of power sources and road construction in the Sho River system, which began at the end of the Taisho period, made it easier for people and goods to move, but at the same time, depopulation progressed and the number of Gassho-style houses decreased. There are five hydroelectric power plants (as of 1997) operated by Kansai Electric Power Co. in the Sho River system: Obara (output 45,700 kW), Shin-Obara (45,000 kW), Naride (35,000 kW), Shin-Naride (58,200 kW), and Akao (32,500 kW).
