A Sufi monastery in Islam. It is a relatively large monastery where Sufis live together with a similar facility called a ribat. While the ribat spread mainly to Arabic-speaking regions, the khanqah originally originated in Iran and spread to the eastern parts of the Islamic world, including Iran and India. It also spread briefly to Syria, Egypt, and other regions during the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. [Furubayashi Seiichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
