Yuzaburo Sakai
Born: Man'en 1 (1860), Kumamoto
Died December 9, 1900. A social thinker in the Meiji period in Paris. In 1879, he moved to Tokyo and entered Nakae Chomin's French Studies School, where he later served as a lecturer and deputy principal. When the World's Fair was held in Paris in 1890, he went there as a secretary on commission from the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and worked on the fair. He also studied social issues and contributed reports on European social conditions and social movements to the magazine Kokumin no Tomo. He also became the first Japanese to attend the second congress of the Second International (→ Socialist International) held in Brussels in 1891, and contributed a report on the event to the Kokumin Shimbun. In 1992, he returned to Japan and founded the "Social Problems Research Society" with Ueno Iwataro, Kojima Ryutaro, and Sato Yusaku. In 1900, he went to France again on commission from the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce as a special reporter for the Asahi Shimbun. He committed suicide in Paris. His main works are ``Excursion Theory'' (1892) and ``European Political History Theory of the 19th Century'' (1900).

明治の社会思想家。 1879年上京して中江兆民の仏学塾に入り,のちにはその講師,塾長代理などをつとめた。 90年万国博覧会がパリで開催された際,農商務省嘱託の事務官としてパリに渡り,万国博覧会の仕事にたずさわる一方,社会問題を研究,ヨーロッパの社会事情,社会運動に関する報告を雑誌『国民之友』に寄稿。また,91年にブリュッセルで行われた第2インターナショナル (→社会主義インターナショナル ) 第2回大会に日本人として初めて出席,その報告を『国民新聞』に寄稿した。 92年,帰国して上野岩太郎,小島龍太郎,佐藤勇作らと「社会問題研究会」を創設。 1900年再び農商務省嘱託,『朝日新聞』特別派遣記者としてフランスに渡った。パリで自殺。主著『排曲学論』 (1892) ,『19世紀欧州政治史論』 (1900) 。
