Born: May 9, 1740, Taranto
Died June 5, 1816. Neapolitan Italian composer. Studied at the Santo Onofrio Conservatory in Naples from 1755 to 1759, and was active as an opera composer from 1763. From 1776, he served Russian Empress Catherine II in St. Petersburg, staging works such as The Barber of Seville (1782). In 1784, he returned to Naples and became the court music director of Ferdinand IV, producing many operas. Because he served Napoleon from 1802 to 1803, he was deprived of his main position after the revolution, and spent his later years in obscurity. He left behind over 100 operas, religious songs, and instrumental pieces, including The Mill Girl (88) and Nina (89).

イタリアの作曲家。 1755～59年ナポリのサント・オノフリオ音楽院に学び，63年以来オペラ作曲家として活躍。 76年よりペテルブルグでロシア女帝エカテリーナ2世に仕え，『セビリアの理髪師』 (1782) などを上演。 84年ナポリに戻りフェルディナンド4世の宮廷楽長となり，数多くのオペラを発表。 1802～03年ナポレオンに仕えたため，革命後おもな地位を奪われ，不遇な晩年をおくった。『水車小屋の娘』 (88) ，『ニーナ』 (89) ほか 100曲以上のオペラと宗教曲，器楽曲を残した。
