Born: May 9, 1740, Taranto Died June 5, 1816. Neapolitan Italian composer. Studied at the Santo Onofrio Conservatory in Naples from 1755 to 1759, and was active as an opera composer from 1763. From 1776, he served Russian Empress Catherine II in St. Petersburg, staging works such as The Barber of Seville (1782). In 1784, he returned to Naples and became the court music director of Ferdinand IV, producing many operas. Because he served Napoleon from 1802 to 1803, he was deprived of his main position after the revolution, and spent his later years in obscurity. He left behind over 100 operas, religious songs, and instrumental pieces, including The Mill Girl (88) and Nina (89).
