Sībawayh (English spelling)

Arabic grammar scholar, ca. ?-770. Born in Basra, Iranian, Mawali of the Kharith ibn Ka'b family. He learned grammar from teachers of the Basra grammar school, including Khalil ibn Ahmad, and wrote a great grammar book called al-Kitāb, which is said to be unparalleled in history, and established Arabic grammar. It is considered to be the source of Arabic grammar, along with Khalil ibn Ahmad's Book of Ayn. After losing the so-called "Hornet Grammar Controversy" with Qisā'i, he died in Shiraz.

アラビア語の文法学者。バスラ生れのイラン人で，ハーリス･ブン･カアブ家のマワーリー。ハリール･ブン･アフマドをはじめとするバスラ文法学派の師たちから文法学を学び，史上比類なしといわれた《書物al‐Kitāb》という大著の文法書を著し，アラビア語文法学を確立した。ハリール･ブン･アフマドの《アインの書》と並んでアラビア語文法学の源泉と見なされている。キサーイーとのいわゆる〈スズメバチ文法論争〉に敗れたのち，シーラーズで没した。
