Generally, it refers to low-lying land along a river or floodplains that are flooded during periods of high water. They are often used for agriculture because suspended solids carried by the river accumulate and renew the soil. The Amazon River basin in Brazil is world famous, covering an estimated area of 64,400 km2, almost twice the land area of Belgium. Agriculture that utilizes varzeas is carried out in the basins of the São Francisco and Parnaiba rivers that flow through the northeastern region of Brazil, where the Amazon receives a lot of rain but the water level changes greatly between the dry and rainy seasons and where most of the basin is semi-arid and has clearly defined dry and rainy seasons.
