...He re-educated the destitute boys at this facility, named Gorky Kolonia, and succeeded in raising them into citizens fit for Soviet society. His educational experiences are described in detail in his novel Pedagogic Poem (1933-35). From 1928 to 1935, he served as director of Dzerzhinsky Kommuna, and practiced socialist education that combined collective education of the youth with productive labor, such as running the first Soviet camera factory with student labor.
