Five hundred arhats

Japanese:
Five hundred arhats

500 arhats (arahans) are the object of worship. In Indian Buddhist scriptures, the number "500" is often given as the number of disciples who always accompanied the Buddha, or as the number of participants in the compilation of Buddhist scriptures immediately after the Buddha's death. Based on this, worship of 500 arhats was born in China and Japan, and 500 arhat statues were carved and 500 arhat temples were built to house them. In China, the names of 500 arhats were listed on the "Kenmyoin 500 Arhat Name Monument," but this does not represent historical fact. Temples famous for their 500 arhat statues in Japan include the Rakanji Temple in Yabakei, Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, Kitain Temple in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, and the Rakanji Temple in Meguro, Tokyo. Daitokuji Temple and Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto City have paintings of 500 arhats.
