Kenpeki Seiya (English spelling)

Japanese: 堅壁清野 - けんぺきせいや（英語表記）jiān bì qīng yě

A defensive tactic that was used for a long time in China from ancient times to the early modern period. It involves digging deep trenches to strengthen the defense of the city walls while removing everything from the fields to torment the enemy. An example of the defense of a wide-area village without a wall is the strategy of Le Bao and Gong Jinghan, who suppressed the White Lotus Sect Rebellion during the Jiaqing period, and an example of the defense of a walled city is the strategy of Yuan Chonghuan, who defended Ningyuan City to the death and forced the invincible Qing Emperor Nurhaci to retreat.
