Nāṭya‐śāstra (English spelling)

Japanese: ナーティヤ･シャーストラ（英語表記）Nāṭya‐śāstra

A Sanskrit treatise on classical Indian drama. It is said to have been written by the sage Bharata, and is therefore usually called Bharatiya Nāṭya-śāstra (Bharata's Dramatic Book). Its date of creation is unknown, but it is thought to date to the 3rd century. The several extant manuscripts are all incomplete, and their contents vary. It covers a variety of theories on Sanskrit drama, including the types of plays, the structure of the play, the plot, characters, acting, terminology, actors, theater, costumes, dance, music, and even rhythm, rhetoric, and poetry. It is considered the oldest and most authoritative work of its kind.

サンスクリットで書かれたインド古典劇に関する演劇論書。バラタBharata仙の作といわれるので，通常《バーラティーヤ･ナーティヤ･シャーストラBhāratīya Nāṭya‐śāstra(バラタの演劇書)》と呼ばれる。成立年代は不明であるが，3世紀ころと推察される。現存の数種の写本はいずれも不完全で，内容にも差異がある。サンスクリット演劇に関する各種の理論，すなわち戯曲の種類，劇の構成，筋の運び，登場人物，演技，用語，俳優，劇場，衣装，舞踊，音楽などの規定から，さらに韻律，修辞法，詩論などにも言及し，この種の著作としては最も古く，権威のあるものとされている。
