A former town in Nishikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. It occupies the lagoon area of the Shinano River delta, almost in the center of the Echigo Plain, and is part of the Kambara grain belt. The city center developed as a market town during the Edo period, and is connected by the Echigo Line. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Niigata City along with Niitsu City, Shirane City, Toyosaka City, Kosudo Town, Yokogoshi Town, Kameda Town in Nakakanbara County, and Iwamuro Village, Aikata Village, Katahigashi Village, Tsukigata Village, and Nakanokuchi Village in Nishikanbara County. 24.76 km2 . 新潟県中部,西蒲原(にしかんばら)郡の旧町。越後平野のほぼ中央,信濃川三角州の潟湖(かたこ)地帯を占め,蒲原穀倉地帯の一部をなす。中心市街は江戸時代,市場町として発達,越後線が通じる。2005年3月新津市,白根市,豊栄市,中蒲原郡小須戸町,横越町,亀田町,西蒲原郡岩室村,味方村,潟東村,月潟村,中之口村と新潟市へ編入。24.76km2。1万2668人(2003)。
