Mary Cassatt

She was the only American female painter in the French Impressionist movement. She was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts in 1865. After moving to Europe, she began exhibiting at French salons in 1872, and worked under the influence of Courbet and Manet. However, in 1874, Degas recognized her talent, and she began participating in the 4th Impressionist Exhibition in 1879. She gradually broke away from the style strongly influenced by Degas, and carved out her own unique field of painting. From the 1980s, she painted many mother-child portraits of intense affection, and was called the "painter of maternity." In 1891, she released a series of color aquatints (copperplate prints) inspired by ukiyo-e prints, which were highly praised by Pissarro. She created a mural for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, but spent her life in France, and in her later years, like Degas, she lost her eyesight due to cataracts. In recent years, she has been highly reevaluated in the United States.

フランス印象派におけるただ1人の女流アメリカ人画家。ペンシルベニア州アリゲニー生まれ。1865年ペンシルベニア美術学校を卒業。渡欧して72年からフランスのサロンに出品し、クールベ、マネの影響下で制作していたが、74年ドガに才能を評価され、79年の第4回印象派展から参加出品している。ドガの強い感化による作風からしだいに抜け出して独自の画境を切り開き、80年代から情愛の濃い母子像を数多く描いて「マテルニテ（母性）の画家」とよばれた。91年浮世絵版画から発想したカラー・アクアチント（銅版画）の連作を発表してピサロから激賞されている。93年のシカゴ万国博覧会のために壁画を制作したが、生涯をフランスで過ごし、晩年は白内障のため、ドガと同じく視力を失った。近年、アメリカで高く再評価されるようになった。
