Dicotyledonous, polypetalous. Annual or perennial. Leafy roots, simple and absent stems, or long and branched. Bisexual or unisexual flowers, often enclosed in sheath-shaped leaves. Perianth is absent, membranous and divided, or consists of 2-5 scales. Stamens are separate or fused, ovary is superior with 1-3 locules, style is short. Capsule seeds are minute and have sticky integument. They grow on rocks in mountain streams, and there are about 200 species in 43 genera worldwide, distributed mainly in the tropics, with 2 genera and 6 species growing in Kyushu and Yakushima in Japan.
