Popular music - Popular music (English spelling)
Music that is popular among the masses. It covers a wide area between folk music and art music. In the Roman period, songs by Greek minstrels, Syrian dancers, black musicians, and hit songs from theaters were already popular, and in the Middle Ages, it was spread by minstrels all over Europe. In Germany, it was used for amateur performances in guild meeting places, but from the 19th century onwards, with the emergence of large cities, it developed along with music halls and light theaters.

大衆に親しまれている音楽。民俗音楽と芸術音楽の中間の広い領域にわたる。ローマ時代にすでにギリシアの吟遊楽人や,シリアの踊り子,黒人の音楽家によるものや,劇場のヒット・ソングが流行したことがあり,中世にはヨーロッパ各地の吟遊楽人によって広められた。ドイツではギルドの集会所でのしろうとによる演奏などに用いられたが,19世紀以降,大都市の出現によりミュージック・ホールや軽演劇場とともに発展した。
