Music that is popular among the masses. It covers a wide area between folk music and art music. In the Roman period, songs by Greek minstrels, Syrian dancers, black musicians, and hit songs from theaters were already popular, and in the Middle Ages, it was spread by minstrels all over Europe. In Germany, it was used for amateur performances in guild meeting places, but from the 19th century onwards, with the emergence of large cities, it developed along with music halls and light theaters.
