Written by Nyojaku of Hino Hokaiji Temple. According to the preface, during a pilgrimage to Mt. Koya in 1184 (Genryaku 1), he heard stories from elders about those who had passed away through nembutsu within the mountain, visited ruins, and collected anecdotes to compile this book. The 38 stories are arranged in chronological order of death, from Kyokai (died 1093) at the beginning to Shoin (died 1187) at the end. All of them are those who passed away at Mt. Koya, and there are many entries on Shingon nembutsu practitioners of the Denpo-in and Mikkyo-in schools beginning with Kakuban, and nembutsu practitioners of the Odawara Bessho school from Kyokai onwards. There are no entries on women, and the origins, careers, and teaching lineage of the deceased are not consistent. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
