Around 1403-82
Italian painter. Born in Siena. Spent his entire career in his hometown. Influenced by such international Gothic painters as Taddeo di Bartolo, Gentile da Fabriano, and Sassetta, he created a style that praised elegance and was highly fantastical and decorative. His "God of St. John" series (c. 1453-54) evokes the world of Expressionism or Surrealism with its delicate lines, intense contrasting colors, and poetic interpretation of reality.

イタリアの画家。シエナ生れ。全活動期間を生地で過ごす。タッデオ･ディ･バルトロTaddeo di Bartolo，ジェンティーレ･ダ･ファブリアーノ，サセッタらの国際ゴシック様式の画家たちから影響を受けながら，優雅さをたたえ，幻想性，装飾性の濃い作風をつくり上げた。〈洗礼者ヨハネ伝〉連作(1453‐54ころ)は，その細やかな描線，激しいコントラストをなす色彩，現実の詩的解釈ゆえに，表現主義ないしはシュルレアリスムの世界を想起させる。
