Around 1403-82 Italian painter. Born in Siena. Spent his entire career in his hometown. Influenced by such international Gothic painters as Taddeo di Bartolo, Gentile da Fabriano, and Sassetta, he created a style that praised elegance and was highly fantastical and decorative. His "God of St. John" series (c. 1453-54) evokes the world of Expressionism or Surrealism with its delicate lines, intense contrasting colors, and poetic interpretation of reality.
