… The predecessor of the former Japanese Naval Academy was the Navy Training School established in Tsukiji, Tokyo in 1869 (Meiji 2) by the Ministry of War, which gathered students from each feudal domain and began British-style elementary officer education. The following year it was renamed the Naval Academy, and in 1876 it was renamed the Naval Academy. In 1873, British Navy Lieutenant Commander Archibald L. Douglas and a group of 34 instructors began teaching, solidifying the school's foundations and transplanting the tradition of gentlemanly education rooted in British customs and habits. In 1888, the school facilities were moved to Etajima, Hiroshima Prefecture, and Etajima became synonymous with military academies. …
