Pope of the Roman Empire (reigned 1073-1085). His former name was Hildebrand. He was from a poor family. He was trusted by Pope Leo IX and served six popes, exerting a great influence. The church reforms he implemented around the time of his accession are often referred to as the Gregorian Reformation. In his Papal Bull he prohibited laypeople from being ordained to the priesthood, and as the Investiture Battle intensified, he excommunicated Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV in 1076 (the Humiliation of Canossa). In 1083, Rome was besieged by Henry, and he fled to Salerno, where he died in obscurity. → Related articles Pope Urban [II] | Pope Leo [IX] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
