Pope of the Roman Empire (reigned 1073-1085). His former name was Hildebrand. He was from a poor family. He was trusted by Pope Leo IX and served six popes, exerting a great influence. The church reforms he implemented around the time of his accession are often referred to as the Gregorian Reformation. In his Papal Bull he prohibited laypeople from being ordained to the priesthood, and as the Investiture Battle intensified, he excommunicated Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV in 1076 (the Humiliation of Canossa). In 1083, Rome was besieged by Henry, and he fled to Salerno, where he died in obscurity.

ローマ教皇（在位1073年―1085年）。前名ヒルデブラントHildebrand。貧家の出身。教皇レオ９世に信任されて６代の教皇に仕え，大きな影響力をふるった。即位前後の教会改革はしばしば〈グレゴリウス改革〉と称される。《教皇教書》で俗人による聖職叙任を禁止，叙任権闘争が激化するなか，1076年神聖ローマ皇帝ハインリヒ４世を破門（カノッサの屈辱）した。1083年ハインリヒにローマを包囲され，サレルノに逃れて不遇のうちに没。
