A town in southwest Cambodia. Alternative spelling: Kompong Som. Also known as Sihanoukville. A port town on the Gulf of Thailand, about 180 km southwest of the capital Phnom Penh, on the southern shore of the mouth of Kompong Som Bay, a tributary of the Gulf of Thailand. The deep-water port, protected from the open sea by an offshore island, was built with French aid as part of the industrialization plan during the Sihanouk regime. It opened as an international commercial port in 1956 and developed into Cambodia's main seaport, replacing the shallow-water port of Kampot, about 70 km to the east. An industrial zone was established within the port area, and a refinery, tractor factory, truck assembly plant, beer factory, etc. were built. Roads and railways connect the town to Phnom Penh. Population: 89,447 (2008). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
