Kampong Cham (English spelling)

Kompong Cham. A city in south-central Cambodia. It is located on the right bank of the Mekong River, about 80 km northeast of the capital Phnom Penh. During the French colonial period, the surrounding hills, made of volcanic red soil, were developed as rubber plantations, and the city developed as a distribution center for these. Other products include corn, rice, cotton, bananas, tobacco, jute, and sugar cane, and there are factories producing crepe rubber, cotton textiles, and distilled liquor within the city. The city was built under the former head of state, Sihanouk, according to an urban plan that was said to be the largest in the country. It is connected to Phnom Penh by water transport over the Mekong River and by road. Population: 33,000 (1987 estimate).

別綴 Kompong Cham。カンボジア中南部の都市。首都プノンペンの北東約 80km，メコン川右岸にある。フランス植民地時代に，火山性の赤色土壌から成る周辺の丘陵地帯がゴムのプランテーション地帯として開発され，市はその集散地として発展。ほかに周辺に産するトウモロコシ，米，綿花，バナナ，タバコ，ジュート，サトウキビなどを集散し，市内にはクレープゴム，綿織物，蒸留酒などの工場が立地する。市街はシアヌーク前元首時代に同国最大規模といわれた都市計画により建設された。プノンペンとメコン川水運，道路で結ばれる。人口3万 3000 (1987推計) 。
