A type of triphenylmethane basic dye, a blue-green pigment. It is also called aotake (green bamboo). It was named after its similar color to the pigment made from malachite. It is obtained by condensing benzaldehyde and dimethylaniline in the presence of hydrochloric or sulfuric acid to synthesize leucobase (4,4'-bisdimethylaminotriphenylmethane), which is then oxidized with lead dioxide and acid. It directly dyes silk and wool blue-green, but is vulnerable to sunlight and alkali. Rather than textiles, it is used to dye wood, paper, miscellaneous goods, etc., as well as indicators and chemical analysis reagents. Because it is water-soluble, it can be used in place of insoluble lake pigments with precipitants such as metal salts.
