Khe Sanh (English spelling)

Japanese: ケサン（英語表記）Khe Sanh

A town in the Annamitan Mountains in central Vietnam. This area is the shortest point between the mountains and the sea in Annamites, and is located at the eastern foot of the Ay Lao Pass, which crosses the high Annamitan Mountains and leads to Laos. A national highway runs from Quang Tri on the coast through here, over the Ay Lao Pass to Sepone in Laos, and further to Savannakhet on the Mekong River. Moreover, as a strategic point about 30 km south of the former border between North and South Vietnam, it was the first line of defense for the former South Vietnam to stop invasions from the north.

ベトナム中央部，アンナン山脈にある町。この辺はアンナンで山と海の距離が最も短い所に当たり，高いアンナン山脈を越えてラオスに通じるアイラオ峠の東麓に位置する。海岸のクアンチからここを経て，アイラオ峠を越えてラオスのセポネ，さらにメコン河畔のサバナケットまで国道が通じる。しかもかつての南北ベトナムの境界線から約30km南にある戦略的要点として，旧南ベトナムにとっては北からの侵攻を食いとめる第一線に当たっていた。
