Constanţa (English spelling)

Constanţa (English spelling)

The capital of Constanta County in southeastern Romania. Population 310,526 (2002). The largest port city in the country, located on the west coast of the Black Sea. In 1984, a 64.2 km canal was completed in the Karasu Valley behind the city, connecting Cernavoda on the right bank of the Danube with Ajgea on the Black Sea coast, a southern suburb of Constanta, shortening the Danube route by about 400 km (Danube-Black Sea Canal). Machinery, shipbuilding, pulp, paper, and metal industries have developed. The administrative district includes a group of resorts along the west coast of the Black Sea, known as the "Pearls of the Black Sea," including Mamaia, Ehoria, Navodari, and Mangalia. Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century BC, it was called Tomis. Later, in the 4th century, during the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine, Genoese settled there and it became Constantiana. After the 15th century, it came under the control of the Ottoman Empire and was called Küstence, but the town fell into disuse. After Romania gained independence in 1878, it rapidly developed as a port city. There are many ruins from the 3rd and 4th centuries left by the Romans.
