Konstanz (English spelling)
Constance in French. A city in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg in southwestern Germany. It is located on the north bank of the waterway where the Rhine flows out of Lake Constance and enters the Untersee in the west, bordering the Swiss border. It was founded by the Roman Emperor Constantine I. It became an imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire in 1192. It came under Austrian control in 1547, and became the Duchy of Baden in 1805. Historically, it is particularly known for being the place where the Council of Constance (Council of Constance) was held in an attempt to end the papal conflict from 1414 to 1418. The lakeside is scenic, and there are city parks, promenades, a casino, and a boat base, making it a popular resort and tourist base around Lake Constance. There are many famous buildings, such as cathedrals built between the 11th and 17th centuries, a Renaissance-style town hall, and the old council hall. The city is the birthplace of airship maker Count Zeppelin (1838-1917) and has a monument to him. Population: 75,089 (1991 estimate).
