〘Noun〙① Buddhist term. One of the Buddhist rituals. It involves placing all ten fingers and both palms together in front of the face, chest, etc. in worship of Buddha, Bodhisattva, etc. In Esoteric Buddhism, there are 12 different forms, called the twelve-fold prayer. ※Daigoji Hon Gangoji Garan Engi Toryuki Zaizaicho - Tenpyo 19 (747) "In the 19th year of Tenpyo, the Emperor immediately sat in the seat, raised his hands in prayer, and was filled with astonishment." ※Konjaku (around 1120) 2 "When he saw the Buddha, his tears shed like rain, and he put his hands together in prayer and rejoiced endlessly . " ② In Noh theater, a form in which both hands are put forward and the palms are joined together in a prayer. ③ An architectural term used in the framework of a wooden building. "In the seven-character structure, there are many connections. However, they are not exempt from the two beautiful connections." 5. Abbreviation for "gassho twist (twisted hands in a pair)". 6. Abbreviation for "gassho oyogi (swim hands in a pair)". 7. In the Edo period, it is an abbreviation for the number of coins. (A) It means 200 mon. Used by carpenters, etc. ※Miscellaneous Hai and Senryu Review Manku-go, An'ei Shichi (1778), Man'ichi: "Gasshau is a shiugi (a tribute given to the heart) " (ro) It means 300 mon. Used by palanquin carriers. ※Sharakuhon, Shinagawa Yoji (1799), "Two hundred is called 'hyausi-ki', and three hundred is called 'gasshau'."

〘名〙① 仏語。仏教で行なう礼法の一つ。十本の手の指と、両方の掌を顔、胸などの前で合わせて、仏、菩薩などを礼拝すること。密教では一二種の型があり、十二合掌という。※醍醐寺本元興寺伽藍縁起并流記資財帳‐天平一九年(747)「天平十九年爾時天皇即従座起合掌、仰天至心流」※今昔(1120頃か)二「仏を見奉て、涙を流し給ふ事雨の如し、合掌(がっしゃう)して喜給ふ事无限(かぎりな)し」② 能楽で、両手を前に出し、掌を合わせて拝む型。③ 木造建築物の骨組構造にいう建築用語。(イ) 屋根などの部分で、二本の材木を山形に組み合わせたもの。※阿蘇学頭坊文書‐文明一三年(1481)正月一一日・阿蘇山衆徒年行事鹿渡橋用抄「ゆい橋の木数次第 一、合掌六本、長さ六いろ三尺」(ロ) 西洋風の小屋組みで、母屋(もや)を受ける斜め材をいう。〔改訂増補日本建築辞彙(1931)〕④ 「がっしょうつい(合掌対)」の略。※日本詩史(1771)一「其七言近体中、警聯殊多。但未駢麗合掌」⑤ 「がっしょうひねり(合掌捻)」の略。⑥ 「がっしょうおよぎ(合掌泳)」の略。⑦ 江戸時代、銭の数をいう隠語。(イ) 銭二百文をいう。大工などが用いる。※雑俳・川柳評万句合‐安永七(1778)満一「がっしゃうはむね上(あげ)に出すしうぎ也」(ロ) 銭三百文をいう。駕籠(かご)かきなどが用いる。※洒落本・品川楊枝(1799)「弐百の事を『ひゃうし木』、三百を『がっしゃう』」
