Mercury oxide - Sankasuigin

Japanese: 酸化水銀 - サンカスイギン
Mercury oxide - Sankasuigin

[ I ] Mercury(I) oxide: Hg2O (417.18). When sodium hydroxide is added to an aqueous solution of mercury(I) nitrate, a black powder is obtained. This powder is considered to be a 1:1 mixture of mercury(II) oxide and mercury. Density 9.8 g cm -3 . Decomposes at 100 °C. Insoluble in water, soluble in nitric acid and hot acetic acid, insoluble in dilute acid and alkaline aqueous solutions. Toxic. [CAS 15829-53-5] [ II ] Mercury(II) oxide: HgO (216.59). Red (red mercury) and yellow (yellow mercury) are known. Both red and yellow are chemically identical. Density 11.14 g cm -3 . The red one has a particle size of 10 to 20 μm, and the yellow one has a particle size of less than 2 μm. If the red one is ground up, it will turn yellow. The red form is obtained by heating mercury(I) nitrate or mercury(II) nitrate, or by directly reacting mercury with oxygen at 300-350 °C. It is used in paints, pigments, paints, ceramics, disinfectants, and analytical reagents. The yellow form is obtained by adding an alkali hydroxide to an aqueous solution of mercury(II) salt. It is used in medicines (ointments for skin diseases) and analytical reagents. Both the red and yellow forms are sparingly soluble in water, soluble in acid, and insoluble in ethanol, acetone, ether, and aqueous alkali solutions. Toxic. [CAS 21908-53-2]
