…Prime Minister Hranicky sought a coalition with the ÖVP, and in January 1987 a grand coalition government consisting of the two major parties was formed. In this grand coalition government, Hranicky welcomed ÖVP leader Alois Mock into the cabinet as deputy prime minister. Hranicky had originally offered to resign after the election, but President Kurt Waldhelm (1918- ) persuaded him to maintain the course of a grand coalition government, as had been the case in Austria's first postwar cabinet, and he decided to take charge of the government. …
