A district on the banks of the Thames in the west of London, England. Until around the 19th century, it was a high-class villa area, famous for the gardens and mansion of A. Pope, a representative 18th-century writer, and Strawberry Hill, a Gothic-style mansion built by H. Walpole. It is now part of the Borough of Richmond, which is part of the City of Greater London. It is home to the famous Rugby Football Union grounds, and many domestic and international matches are held there each year.
