Other old-fashioned fishing methods include dokunagashi (poisonous flow), which involves pouring knotweed leaves, peppercorn juice, walnut skin juice, and lime into the river; nigoshibuchi (mudgy pools), which involves muddying the river water; seboshi (dried shallows), which involves damming the current, and kaibori (dug digging). Cormorant fishing on the Nagara River, which is now famous as a tourist spot, was once practiced in many places, as can be seen in the uhiki (cormorant pulling) and torihiki (bird pulling) customs that remain in the upper reaches of the Shimanto River in Kochi Prefecture.
