After his father's death, he ruled Italy, Africa, and Illyricum together with Constantine II and Constantius II. In 340, his brother Constantine II, who ruled Spain, Gaul, and Britain, invaded Italy, repelling the invasion and killing his brother. He then took control of the West and defeated the Franks. He protected Catholicism and suppressed Arianism and paganism. He was killed by F. Magnentius, who pretended to be the emperor.
