...His paternal ancestors were nobles of distinguished standing; his father, a dilettante but skilled poet, and his uncle, Vasily, a poet of the Karamzin school. His maternal great-grandfather, General Gannibal Abram Petrovich Gannibal (c. 1697-1781), was of Ethiopian origin and was a favorite of Peter the Great. This African blood is clearly evident in Pushkin's temperament and appearance.
