A Roman writer of the 1st century. Born in Cadiz, Spain. Author of De re rustica (12 books). This is a treatise dealing with various aspects of peasant life and work, divided into many sections such as farms and cultivation, crops, grapes, trees, livestock, poultry, fish, wild animals, bees, gardens, and the duties of the manorial caretaker and his wife. Book 10, which deals with gardens, is written in epic meter as a continuation of Virgil's Agricultural Poems. As a practical and scientific farmer, Columella hoped to revive Roman agriculture, lamented the increase in foreign grain imports, the large rural mansions, and the absentee landlord system, proposed direct management by the landlords themselves, and praised Virgil.
