Three British siblings and sisters from the Baronet Sitwell family. As prominent figures in British literary and social circles after World War I, they defended intellectual freedom, criticized conventional delusions, and satirized snobbism. The eldest sister, Edith Sitwell (1887-1964), did not receive a formal education, but first compiled the annual collection of modern poetry, The Wheel (1916-21), which introduced young poets and brought a breath of fresh air to the poetry world. After her debut collection of poems, Mother and Other Poems (1915), she published Façade (1922), which incorporated jazz rhythms. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
