…Born near Frankfurt an der Oder, he studied law and Chinese studies before starting his literary career. After serving in the army and serving as a prisoner of war, he restarted his life after World War II. In 1950 he received the '47 Group' prize, and in 1953 he married Ilse Aichinger (1921- ), a female writer who also belonged to the same group. In 1959 he received the Büchner Prize, and after Ben's death he became the most influential poet in West Germany. …
