Production that is possible only if there is an accumulation of goods that are the result of past production is called production that uses capital. Production that uses tools and machines is an example of this. Production that takes time is also production that uses capital, since it requires the accumulation of raw materials that are processed into products through the production process and the subsistence materials that support labor. Regarding this type of production, there has been an endless debate in economic theory since D. Ricardo about questions such as what is capital, how is its amount measured, what is the basis for profit income, and how the amount of profit is related to the use of capital.
