Matsudaira Ietada - Matsudaira Ietada

He was a military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period and a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu. His father was Itada of the Matsudaira clan of Fukozu, Mikawa Province, and his mother was the daughter of Udono Nagamochi. He inherited the family headship after his father was killed in battle at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575 (Tensho 3). He was often stationed at Makinohara Castle during the battle with Takeda Katsuyori over Takatenjin Castle in Totomi Province. He later participated in the attack on the Takeda clan of Kai in 1582, the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1584, and the attack on the Hojo clan of Odawara in 1590. In the same year, when Ieyasu was transferred to the Kanto region, he was given Oshi Castle in Musashi Province with a fief of 10,000 koku, and later Kajiro Castle and Omigawa Castle in Shimousa Province. In 1599 (Keicho 4), he was ordered to defend Fushimi Castle, and in July of the following year, he was killed in battle during a prelude to the Battle of Sekigahara, when attacked by the Western Army. He excelled in civil engineering techniques such as the construction of moats and stone walls, and his "Ietada Diary," which covers the period from October 1577 (Tensho 5) to December 1594 (Bunroku 3), is a fundamental historical document of this period.
