Roman general and politician. Born into a distinguished family, he was the maternal grandfather of the Gracchi brothers. Known as Scipio the Elder, he defeated the Carthaginian army in the Iberian Peninsula during the Second Punic War, and then defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202 BC, earning him the title of Africanus. He then defeated Antiochus III in Asia Minor, but after returning home he fought with Cato the Elder and others, was sued, and died in despair.
