A former town in Minamitakaki District in the southeast of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture. The Shimabara Railway runs through the town. In addition to producing potatoes and rice, tobacco and mandarin oranges are also cultivated. The town also engages in fishing, such as wakame seaweed farming, and produces somen noodles. In March 2006, the town merged with the towns of Katsusa, Kuchinotsu, Minamiarima, Kitaarima, Nishiarie, Futsu, and Fukae in Minamitakaki District to become Minamishimabara City. Area: 23.33 km2 .
