A former town in Minamitakaki District in the southeast of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture. The Shimabara Railway runs through the town. In addition to producing potatoes and rice, tobacco and mandarin oranges are also cultivated. The town also engages in fishing, such as wakame seaweed farming, and produces somen noodles. In March 2006, the town merged with the towns of Katsusa, Kuchinotsu, Minamiarima, Kitaarima, Nishiarie, Futsu, and Fukae in Minamitakaki District to become Minamishimabara City. Area: 23.33 km2 . 長崎県島原半島南東部の南高来(みなみたかき)郡の旧町。島原鉄道が通じる。ジャガイモ，米を産するほか，タバコ・ミカン栽培が盛ん。ワカメ養殖など漁業も営み，そうめんも産する。2006年３月，南高来郡加津佐町，口之津町，南有馬町，北有馬町，西有家町，布津町，深江町と合併し市制，南島原市となる。23.33km2。9486人（2003）。
