Jacopo da Bologna (English spelling)

…In Italy, many madrigals, ballata (French Villeret type), and caccia were composed in the canon technique. Jacopo da Bologna (active in the mid-14th century) and the blind Landini are well known. France has many solo songs with instrumental accompaniment, while Italy has many duets. …

From Madrigal

...The word derives from the Italian madrigale, and was originally a form of poetry. Polyphonic songs based on such poetry were already being composed by Italian composers in the 14th century. A good example is Jacopo da Bologna's Non al suo amante, based on a poem by Petrarch. Its musical form is characterized by an AAB pattern with a repeat in the first half. In contrast, the Renaissance madrigal, which became popular after 1530, was usually in free form.
