…The Realist school was pioneered by al-Sharqāwī (1920-87) with the publication of The Great Earth, followed by Naguib Mahfouz and Tayyib Sāliḥ (1928- ). In the short story genre, after the Romantic school of Mahmūd Taymūr (1894-1973) and Yahya Ḥaqqī (1905-92), the Realist school was completed by Yusuf Idrīs (1927-91).
