A river in central France. It is the largest tributary of the Loire. It is 408 km long. It originates in the Cevennes plateau in southern France, flows north through the center of the Massif Central, and joins the Loire at Nevers. It has many tributaries in the Margeride mountains to the west and the volcanic region of Auvergne. The lowlands along the Allier, with Clermont-Ferrand at its western end, are fertile and are called the Limagne. Agriculture (wheat, corn) and livestock farming (beef cattle, pigs) are thriving here. Vichy, at the northern end of the Limagne, was the city where the Provisional Government was located during World War II, and is famous for its mineral waters and hot springs.
