In general, it refers to the people who speak Marathi and live in the areas from Goa to Bombay (Mumbai) and Nagpur in the Indian peninsula. Historically, it refers to the Maratha Empire and its people, founded by the hero Shivaji in the 17th century. → Maratha Confederacy
