One of them, Henry of Burgundy, married Alfonso VI's daughter Teresa, and in 1095 was granted the fief of the land between the Minho and Douro rivers as Count of Portugal. His son, Afonso Henriques (Afonso I), gained independence from Castile in 1143 with the mediation of the Pope, and founded the Kingdom of Portugal, establishing the House of Burgundy with its capital in Coimbra. …
