An animal of the family Salamandridae in the order Caudata in the class Amphibians. It is also called the European newt. It is found in central and southern Europe, northwestern Africa, and Asia Minor. It is 13 to 28 centimeters long. It has a black background with linear or dotted yellow markings, and is divided into many subspecies. It lives in mountain and hilly forests and is terrestrial. Fertilization is internal, and females give birth to about 20 larvae in running or still water in the spring. The closely related Alpine salamandra S. atra , found from the Alps to the mountains on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, is completely black and gives birth to one or two metamorphic individuals.
