Arius - Arius (English spelling)

An ancient Christian heretic. Probably born in Libya, he studied in Antioch and became a pastor in Alexandria. His theological position caused a schism in the church, and he was excommunicated by the Council of Alexandria, held around 319 under Bishop Alexander (c. 250-328). However, the conflict did not subside, and Emperor Constantine convened the Council of Nicaea in 325 to settle the matter. His belief in the one and only God and his understanding of Christ as the first creation of God the Father were rejected as heresy by his opponents Athanasius and others, and he was exiled. However, his ideas and his followers continued to be linked to political power struggles and brought controversy to the Christian church for a long time afterwards.

古代キリスト教の異端者。おそらくリビアに生まれ、アンティオキアで学び、アレクサンドリアで牧職についた。彼の神学的立場は教会内に分裂をもたらし、319年ごろ司教アレクサンドロスAlexandros（250ころ―328）のもとで開かれたアレクサンドリア教会会議によって、彼は破門された。しかしその後も紛争は収まらず、コンスタンティヌス皇帝は決着をつけるために325年ニカイア公会議を招集した。ここで、唯一絶対の神の信仰にたち、キリストを父なる神の第一の被造物として理解する彼の説は、論敵アタナシウスらによって異端説として排斥され、追放刑に処せられた。しかし彼の思想とその追従者たちは、その後も長く政治的な勢力抗争と結び付いて、キリスト教会に論争をもたらした。
