Its abbreviation is Phe. It is a southern constellation that can be seen near the horizon in late autumn. The name "Phoenix" comes from the immortal bird Phoenix in Greek mythology, which is said to be resurrected by throwing itself into a fire every 500 years. It is one of the 12 southern constellations newly created by German astronomer J. Bayer in his star atlas "Uranometoria." Its alpha star, Zaurak, has a luminosity of 2.4 magnitude, and there are no other notable bright stars. Its approximate position is 1h0m in right ascension and -48° in declination. Its culmination at 8pm is in early December.

略号はPhe。晩秋の地平線近くに見える南天の星座。鳳凰という名はギリシア神話にあらわれる不死鳥フォイニクスのことで，500年ごとに火中に身を投じて生命を新たによみがえらせるという。ドイツの天文学者J.バイヤーが星図《ウラノメトリアUranometoria》で新設した南天12星座の一つである。α星ザウラクが光度2.4等で，ほかには目につく輝星はない。概略位置は赤経1h0m，赤緯－48゜。午後8時の南中は12月上旬である。
