This clan ruled over northern Shinano, with its headquarters at Matsushiro Castle (also known as Kaizu Castle or Matsushiro Castle; Matsushiro Town, Nagano City) in Hanishina County, Shinano Province. After Uesugi Kagekatsu was transferred to Aizu in 1598 (Keicho 3), Toyotomi daimyo Tamaru Naomasa was the first to be appointed to the clan with a fief of 40,000 koku. In 1600 (Keicho 5), Tokugawa Ieyasu appointed Mori Tadamasa and granted him 137,500 koku per yen in the four northern Shinano counties (Sarashina, Hanishina, Takai, and Minochi) to safeguard against the Uesugi and Sanada clans. After the Battle of Sekigahara, the Mori clan carried out a general land survey and established the kokudaka system. In 1603, Ieyasu's sixth son, Matsudaira Tadateru, was given control of four districts and all of the land, and Okubo Nagayasu was in charge of administration. After Tadateru's removal, Matsudaira Tadamasa (Echizen clan) was given 120,000 koku in 1616 (Genwa 2), Sakai Tadakatsu was given 100,000 koku in 1618, and Sanada Nobuyuki (Nobuyuki) was transferred from Ueda in 1622. The Sanada clan had a total of 135,000 koku, including the Numata domain in Kozuke Province (Gunma Prefecture). Nobuyuki had established the foundations of the domain's administration by the time he died at the age of 93. In 1656 (Meireki 2), his second son Nobumasa inherited the Matsushiro domain, and his eldest son Nobuyoshi's son Nobuyoshi inherited the Numata domain, and the Numata domain was later removed, leaving the Matsushiro domain with 100,000 koku in four districts and 95 villages. After Nobumasa, Yukimichi, Nobuhiro, Nobuyasu, Yukihiro, Yukitaka, Yukitsura, Yukinori, and Yukimoto inherited titles until the abolition of the domain. The third lord, Yukimichi, promoted agricultural policies such as the land survey in 1666 (Kanbun 6), and the sixth lord, Yukihiro, is known for his knowledge of haiku poetry as well as for reforming the domain government by appointing Onda Mokuyukika. The eighth lord, Yukitsura, was the second son of Matsudaira Sadanobu, and worked to encourage the arts and martial arts, promote industry, and was appointed as a senior councilor in the field of maritime defense, nurturing Sakuma Shozan and others. In the Boshin War of 1868 (Keio 4), the area fought in Hokuetsu and Oshu as a Shinshu branch of the government army. In 1871 (Meiji 4), the domain was abolished, and the area was merged into Matsushiro Prefecture and then Nagano Prefecture.
